  1. FURTHER NOTES TO PARENTS AND TEACHERS

  3. INTRODUCTION

  5. Generally this disc came about because three years ago, when 
  6. my son Nicholas was five he became captivated by the world of 
  7. computers.  He could spend hours manipulating pixelated, empty 
  8. characters around in, what seemed to me, pointless and 
  9. destructive games.
  10.  
  11. I worried about his eyesight, about his tense little shoulders 
  12. hunched over the life saving controls, about the perspective on 
  13. life he was acquiring and, most of all, I worried about the 
  14. opportunity I was allowing to be missed. 
  15.  
  16. I longed to be able to say 'yes you can play with the computer,  
  17. and here's the disc I want you to use', knowing that whilst he was 
  18. having fun, a real contribution would be made to those things he 
  19. was expected to learn at school.

  21. I looked for the disc I wanted and couldn't find it.  So we built it.
  22.  
  23. The object of the disc was to bring learning into the home and to 
  24. make that happen at the child's request. 
  25.  
  26. It's too late to help Nicholas, but he still loves playing with it.
  27.  
  28. Specifically,   ╘The Greatest Toy Shop on Earth╒; deals with a 
  29. number of topics related to Science for children of four to eight 
  30. years of age. Within these topics, there are a number of specific 
  31. activities for your child to enjoy which support one or more of the 
  32. Attainment Targets set for KEY STAGE 1 of the UK National 
  33. Curriculum.

  35. The Science that is taught to 5 year olds comes out of the every 
  36. day routines of life.  It is as well to remember that much of 
  37. Science is about practical investigation, and although this disc 
  38. allows the child to investigate activities interactively, through the 
  39. screen, it is also very valuable to encourage your child to take 
  40. their interactive experiences into the real world.  Much of the 
  41. ╘Further Activities╒ mentioned in the 'Parent's notes' section take 
  42. the child away from the Toy shop and suggest related activities to 
  43. be carried out in a ╘real╒ environment.

  45. Progress through the Science disc can be recorded on the hard 
  46. disc, to show teachers and parents how their child is developing in 
  47. the different subject areas represented in the ╘Toy Shop╒.  The disc 
  48. is by no means exhaustive in terms of the Science curriculum, but 
  49. with the help of these notes and an enthusiastic and imaginative 
  50. companion to awaken a child╒s inherent inquisitive nature - a lot 
  51. of the aspects of Science for 4 to 8 year olds have been addressed, 
  52. at least in an elementary form.
  53.  
  54. No two children will be at exactly the same point of learning in 
  55. every area and, therefore, some activities will be of greater 
  56. benefit to some children than to others.  Children at the higher 
  57. end of the age range will enjoy the toyshop and will find that 
  58. their scientific knowledge is reinforced, even though they may 
  59. already know the 'facts' behind the activity.

  61. Lastly, but perhaps most importantly of all - we ask that you 
  62. encourage your child have fun in ╘The Greatest Toy Shop on Earth╒, 
  63. and be free to explore the great depths of knowledge hidden 
  64. behind the screen.  That way they will always come back for 
  65. more!
